Matriarchy Short Film at Schwules Museum in Berlin until February 14, 2018

"Matriarchy" short film is still making waves and now internationally! This past week we found ourselves in Berlin celebrating our movie's presence in the "12 Moons Film Lounge" gallery exhibit at the Schwules Museum. Last fall, I embarked on this project by watching Patricia Zamorano's "Matriarchy" monologue as part of the MATRIARCH monologue performance (Little Casa) produced by Patricia Zamorano and Jesse Bliss of The Roots and Wings Project. This project honestly reignited in me my passion for filmmaking; which had been dormant for close to a year. Seeing Lauren Ballesteros' performance of Patricia's piece gave me such vivid images, and made me feel so empowered that I grabbed my camera, and - with Patricia's blessings and Lauren's gumption - I returned to directing for film.

Fast-forward to me and Patricia Zamorano (Writer/Co-Director/Producer) holding hands in gratitude of each other, and for the artwork that we inspire in one another. We stood in awe outside one of the largest LGBTQ+ museums in the world: Schwules Museum on Sunday, February 4, 2018. We entered the space and couldn't believe the amount of people present on a Sunday. We later found out there were close to 300 visitors that day. It was our time to sit and watch our film in the gallery, and take it all in.

On Monday, February 5th, we got to meet Vera Hofmann, the Board of Director who invited us to be part of the "12 Moons Film Lounge" exhibit. We gave her an appreciation packet with letters of support to introduce her to our various communities and show our gratitude.

12 Moons Film Lounge Trailer

Our film is part of the first moon collection - pieces involving motherhood and daughters - and it plays alongside other incredible works developed and produced by feminists. If you find yourself in Berlin between now and February 14, 2018 - I invite you to go see our film alongside many others at Schwules Museum.

Our time in Berlin was brief - seven days in total. We spent two afternoons at The Schwules Museum to support the gallery, visit the museum, and meet Vera Hofmann and her team. The space is expansive and the work is truly inspiring because it comes from all over the world.

Patricia and I also took some time to visit parts of Berlin that show its troubling history. And although visiting places like Sachsenhausen was difficult, I will say this about the country: they do their best to show the history as honestly as possible. Maybe to make sure it never happens again, or maybe to just own up to it. Regardless, the city is beautiful because it shows itself fully with no shame. It's a great city, it's diverse, and it has a rich community. Their street art had labels that said "fuck walls" on them, and protested their own history of separation. We ate pho, ramen, peruvian, italian, cuban, and german food. Folks were genuinely nice and curious about us, when we confessed we could not speak German. It was so beautiful that people assumed we were one of them. I hope to return to this country again, as I feel we only scratched the surface of the surface. I know there is much to learn from their history, their people, their culture, and the immigrants inhabiting the space.
